Owens Community College Athletics has earned the 2022-23 OCCAC All-Sports Award, its eighth such accolade all-time, on the strength of three league championships this past season. The Express finished as runner-up in 2021-22 after claiming the top spot in seven of the previous 10 seasons.
All nine league institutions are represented in the OCCAC All-Academic accolades for Spring 2023. Honored student-athletes achieved a 3.30 GPA with 12 completed credit hours during the spring semester.
Grades are finalized and it is time to announce the OCCAC Academic All-Conference honorees for the fall semester. A 3.30 GPA or higher while completing at least 12 credit hours during the semester is required to earn the laurel.
Seven different schools are represented in the 2022 OCCAC Volleyball annual awards, including Lorain County taking home the Coach, Player and Libero of the Year honors.
Chelsey Farris (Lorain County) and Ava Sholtis (Owens) both concluded their regular season by earning OCCAC co-Player of the Week honors for Oct. 17-23. Farris shined en route to her fourth award of the year, and Sholtis picked up award #2 after pushing The Express to their 18th OCCAC championship since 2000 with a 4-0 final week.
Edison State Volleyball is represented in the OCCAC Player of the Week award for the second straight Monday after Sarah Clark earned the accolade for Oct. 10-16. Charger teammate Brianna Slusher won the previous week.
Brianna Slusher, a sophomore middle blocker from Edison State Community College, was named the OCCAC Volleyball Player of the Week on October 10, marking her third career recognition. She was previously voted as such twice during the 2021 season.
For the third consecutive month and third time through the season’s first seven weeks, Chelsey Farris was voted as the OCCAC Player of the Week. The sophomore dominated in Lorain County’s two wins and posted impressive numbers overall for the week of Sept. 26 – Oct. 2.
Ava Sholtis, a six-rotation outside hitter, hoisted Owens Volleyball to the top of the conference standings by handing Lorain County its first OCCAC loss of the season and grabbing a second dub versus Lakeland. The Express improved to 5-1 against league foes and Sholtis earned OCCAC Player of the Week honors for Sept. 19-25.
Lindsey Brayton did it all in two matches for Clark State College en route to an OCCAC Player of the Week selection for Sept. 12-18. The sophomore registered 4.7 points and 3.5 digs per game in a pair of conference battles.
Chelsey Farris produced another award-worthy effort in Lorain County’s 3-0 sweep over Lakeland, earning her second OCCAC Player of the Week honor of the young season. She pounded 15 kills with a lone error on 24 attempts (.583 hitting percentage).
Sophomore outside hitter Maddie White lifted The Express to six wins in six tries at the Owens Express Invitational, garnering OCCAC Player of the Week recognition for Aug. 29-Sept. 4. She accounted for nearly five points per set as Owens secured all 18 sets played.
Maggie Riley, a freshman setter for Lorain County, is the OCCAC Player of the Week for Aug. 22-28. She dished out 116 total assists (7.7/game) and dug 2.7 balls per game as the Commodores split four non-conference tilts.
