Kamilah Carter of Owens Community College and Winston Grays of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College have been named the OCCAC player of the week in women's basketball and men's basketball, respectively.
Carter, a sophomore guard, has led No. 9 Owens to a 4-1 start this year, including four straight wins. Over that five game stretch, she has averaged a team-high 18.4 points per game, as well as 5.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. She had a season-high 25 points in a 90-61 win over Wayne County Community College, which was preceded by a 23 point game in a 77-68 win over Southeastern Community College. She hasn't scored less than 12 points yet this year, while shooting 22-for-26 from the foul line.
"Kamilah had big shoes to fill with the departure of four players that moved on to NCAA D-II programs, leaving only one returning starter," said Owens women's basketball head coach Michael Llanas. "She has responded in the first five games of the year leading the No. 9 Express to a 4-1 start, with its lone loss coming at the hands of perennial power Kirkwood Community College. Kamilah averaged 18.4 points per game while shooting 84 percent from the free throw line and averaging nearly five assists per game. The redshirt sophomore point guard capped off the week with a 16 point, seven assist performance in a win over No. 10 Monroe College."
Grays, a sophomore guard, has led No. 20 Cincinnati State to a perfect 5-0 start this year. He is averaging 21 points per game on 45.5 percent shooting overall (42.4 percent from 3-point range), while also adding 3.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
His season-high 31 point game came in a 79-57 win over State Fair Community College. In the game, he was 12-for-32 from the field.
Grays has not scored fewer than 17 points in a game this year, while scoring 20 or more three times. In the Lake Land Roundball Classic championship game win over Mineral Area, he had 20 points, four assists and six steals en route to MVP honors.
