Freshman Byrd leads Cincinnati State to 5-1 road win over Heartland
Parkland, IL---The Cincinnati State men's soccer team concluded their Illinois weekend road trip on Sunday with a 5-1 victory over Heartland Community College in the second game of the "Kick for the Cure" Soccer Showcase hosted by Parkland Community College.

Parkland, IL---The Cincinnati State men's soccer team concluded their Illinois weekend road trip on Sunday with a 5-1 victory over Heartland Community College in the second game of the "Kick for the Cure" Soccer Showcase hosted by Parkland Community College.
Freshman forward Vonne Byrd, a graduate of Carroll High School, led the Surge offense with two goals on the day in the 68th and 72nd minute. Fellow freshman and high school teammate Trae Collins assisted on Byrd's first goal and scored one of his own in the 85th.
Sophomores Liam Doyle and Kyle Grothaus also scored on the afternoon. Kevin Walker, who ranked second in the nation in points, picked up two more with assists on the Grothaus and Collins goals.
With the win, the Surge improve to 3-0-1 overall. Heartland fell to 2-2-0 on the season.
The Surge, who are ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA national poll, will play their fifth road game in a row against regional opponent Ancilla Community College next Saturday. Ancilla enters the game coming off a 2-1 win over perennial power Schoolcraft College and a 4-0 win over Jackson Community College.
"We had a productive weekend," Head Coach Mike Combs said. "We will look to have a productive week of practice and get ready for a big regional game against a confident Ancilla team."
The Cincinnati State and Ancilla defense have allowed only one goal each this season.
