Marissa Pine (Edison State), winner of three consecutive OCCAC Pitcher of the Week awards, is joined this week by her teammate Mackenzie Byrne and baseball honorees Dennarius Walk (Terra State) and now two-time Pitcher of the Week Max Wagar (Bryant & Stratton, OH).
Pine’s career total of weekly laurels moves to eight (seven pitcher, one position player). This week, the sophomore racked up three wins in the circle, hurling 16.1 scoreless innings with a wild 31:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Pine’s week included two complete game shutouts over league foes Lakeland and Owens, totaling 24 Ks.
Byrne went 8-for-17 (.471) with two doubles, a homerun and eight RBI as the Chargers rattled off six victories. She both scored and drove in at least one run in five of six games.
Walk put together one of the most clutch performances the OCCAC has seen in recent history. It began with a walk-off double in extra innings to close out a 3-2 win over Hocking. He followed it up with another walk-off in Game Two’s 6-5 winner. Walk kept it coming in Game Three by driving in the go-ahead run in an eventual 8-5 win. Game Four saw him connect on a 2-out, 2-RBI single to stretch the Titan advantage to 5-2 late in the series-sweeping clincher.
Wagar battled his way through a 7-inning complete game, pushing the Bobcats to a 3-1 win over Clark State. He worked around three hits and two walks, striking out eight batters in allowing a lone run to come across during the tightly-contested game.
