Cincinnati State T&CC celebrates successful 2009-10 sports year
After a year that included three of the four college sports winning conference championships and two appearances in the National Junior College Finals, Cincinnati State student athletes, faculty, and staff came together to celebrate, reflect, and honor those who made the past year so special.
Opening the night was guest speaker Terry Nelson, former UC starting forward from the 1992 Final Four team delivered  to an audience of 300 members of Cincinnati State and the local community. Nelson provided the crowd with a message of triumph and overcoming the odds which College President John Henderson echoed in his address as he handed out engraved crystal trophies to the recipients of the President's Award (Best Leadership, Academic, & Athletic Success), Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year. Academic Advisors Julie McLaughlin and Joyce Rimlinger presented the Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Ending the night, Dr. Henderson praised all of the coaches and athletes, especially Director of Athletics and member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, Theresa Check,  on revitalizing the Cincinnati State program in a short 2-year span. The President also made sure to recognize the job that Coach Andre Tate (men's basketball) and Coach Scott Webb (golf) on getting their teams to the National Finals and help gain more recognition for the program. Finally, Dr. John Henderson acknowledged the accomplishments of the 2009-2010 Cincinnati State Athletic program, the strides it has taken, and the overall success the teams have had earning three conference championships (men's basketball, women's basketball, and men's soccer) which should be considered as one of the most successful seasons of any program in the area.
Tamara Sneed - Sneed led the women's basketball team to back-to-back championships in the Ohio College Community College Athletic Conference. She led the Surge in scoring with 14 points per game. She also averaged 8 rebounds and 3 steals per game. Tamara Sneed received All-Conference honors and accepted a scholarship to play at Central State University, a D-II program in Wilberforce, Ohio.
"Tamara is a player that you need on your team." Coach Theresa Check said. "She wants to take the last shot, fight for the rebound, or make the extra pass. She wants to win."
Jake Jones - In his first year playing for Coach Mike Combs, Jones complimented a number of talented players as the Surge won their 5th OCCAC championship in seven years. Jones had 5 goals and 11 assists in his first season with the team. He excelled in the classroom making Dean's list and having the highest GPA of any athlete in the athletic program.
"Jake came to me and was upset and amazed he got a B in Honors Anatomy." Julie McLaughlin joked while presenting Jake with award. "Jake is an amazing student with an incredible work ethic and will no doubt be an All-Academic American next year."
