Lorain County and Sinclair coaches team up to battle cancer
Please join Coach Price (Sinclair Community College) and Coach Berrios (Lorain County Community College) on Saturday the 30th of January 4:00pm and show your support by wearing your sneakers.
Coaches vs. CancerĀ® Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend, a collaborative initiative of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), is slated for the weekend of Jan. 29-31, 2010. Participating NABC member coaches will wear sneakers instead of dress shoes with their suits during weekend games to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and its vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Basketball fans are also encouraged to wear sneakers to games that weekend to show their support

Owens moves up one spot to number four in this week's poll
The Owens Community College women's basketball team moved up one spot to number four in this week's poll. The Express are 19-2 overall, 5-0 in the OCCAC and led by Jasmine Blanton who averages 16.8 points per game. Brittany Darling averages 13.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, Sarah Clark averages 11.0 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Cincinnati State Technical & Community College is one of several OCCAC teams in the others receiving votes catagory this week. The Surge are 12-8 overall, 4-1 OCCAC and are led by Shardai Morrison-Fountain who averages 18.9 points per game. Tamara Sneed averages 13.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, while Na'Tasha Farr averages 12.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Javonna Saddler averages 6.1 rebounds per game. Edison Community College is also in the others receiving votes catagory this week. The Chargers are 13-3 overall, 3-2 in the OCCAC and are led by Andrea Meyer, who averages 12.8 points per game. Jodi Benanzer averages 10.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while Ashley Rice averages 10.7 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Rachel Stiebich averages 10.1 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. Lakeland Community College is also in the others receiving votes catagory. The Lakers are 15-4 overall, 4-1 in the OCCAC and are led by SirShawna Dowdy with 18.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while Aslea Williams with 14.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Columbus State drops seven spots in this week's men's basketball poll.
Not only did the OCCAC standings receive a major shake up after last week's battle of the top teams, the OCCAC teams in the NJCAA weekly Division II Men's Basketball poll tumbled as well. Columbus State Community College dropped seven spots to number ten this week after losing to Cincinnati State Technical & Community College and Cuyahoga Community College last week. The Cougars are 16-3 overall and 3-2 in the OCCAC and are led by Josh Eichelberger with 15.0 points and 8.9 points per game. Lonnie Hayes averages 14.3 points per game, while Rod Hurst averages 13.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Marcus Britt averages 11.9 points per game, while Karriem Baker averages 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Lawrence Bridges averages 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, while Anthony Williams averages 5.2 points per game. Sinclair Community College dropped to the others receiving votes catagory this week, down from number 11 last week. The Tartan Pride are 16-4 overall and 3-3 in the OCCAC and are led by Jason Clardy, who averages 14.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. British Alexander averages 14.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, while De'Angelo Gates averages 11.1 points per game. Kevin Vest is pulling down five rebounds per game for Sinclair.

Lakeland's Calhoun named OCCAC Men's basketball player of the week
Lakeland Community College freshman guard Tevin Calhoun has named OCCAC men's basketball player of the week. Calhoun scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in two games last week. He also had one assist, two steals and three blocks on the week. Tevin shot 58.6 percent (17-29) from the field, 57.1 percent (4/7) from the arc and 77.7 percent (7/9) from the charity stripe. Calhoun hit two three throws with virtually no time left on the clock on Saturday to beat Cincinnati State T&CC. "Tevin is an energetic player on both ends of the floor, who brings the ability to shoot, defend and slash.", said Head Coach Terry Bowe. The OCCAC congratulates Tevin on the award.

Cincinnati Morrison-Fountain named OCCAC Women's basketball player of the week
Cincinnati State Technical & Community College freshman guard Shardai Morrison-Fountain has been named OCCAC women's basketball player of the week for the week ending January 23. Morrison-Fountian scored 46 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out 16 assists in two games last week. She also had nine steals and one block. Shardai shot 57.1 percent (20/35) from the floor, 30.8 percent (4/13) from the three point arc and 25.0 percent (2/8) from the the free throw line. "Shardai is a freshman that leads by example. She is a tremendous hustle player that leaves it all on the court night in and night out.", said Head Coach Teresa Check. The OCCAC congratulates Shardai on the award.

Lakeland's Lampley named OCCAC men's basketball player of the week
Lakeland Community College sophomore guard Darrell Lampley has been named the OCCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Lampley scored 45 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out 20 assists. He also had four steals and shot 58.6 percent (17-29) from the floor. Darrell shot 57.1 percent (4-7) from the arc and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the charity stripe. "Darrell constistently helps his teammates become better players and make good decisions on and off the court. Darrell is a 3.1 student and works hard on the off the court.", said Head Coach Terry Bowe. The OCCAC congratulates Darrell on the award.

Sinclair's Frey named OCCAC women's basketball player of the week
Sinclair Community College freshman forward Emily Frey has been named the OCCAC women's basketball player of the week. Frey had 43 points and 25 rebounds in two games last week. She also had six steals and shot 42.4 percent (14-33) from the floor. Emily shot 66.7 percent (2-3) from three point arc and 76.5 percent (13-17) from the free throw line. She had a double-double in both games. "Emily has set herself apart as an outstanding player. Her hustle and intensity have helped our team start of strong.", said Head Coach Jeff Dillon. The OCCAC congratulates Emily on the award.

Edison's Lowe named OCCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Edison Community College sophomore guard Keith Lowe is the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week for the week ending January 9th. Lowe scored half of the Chargers points in a 86-83 win over Cuyahoga Community College. Lowe had 43 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals for the game. He shot 12 of 19 from the field, including six of nine from the three point arc. He was also 13 of 16 from the free throw line. Coach Dave Zeller said, "The best game I have seen him play, he was incredible". The OCCAC congratulates Keith on this honor.

Edison's Cates named OCCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Edison Community College freshman wing player Angie Cates has been named the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference player of the week for the week ending January 9th. Cates scored 14 points and had ten assists in a 73-55 win over Cuyahoga Community College. She aloso had five rebounds and one steal. Cates was five of nine from the field, including three of five from the three point line. She was also one of two from the charity stripe. The OCCAC congratsulates Angie on the award.

Blanton and Monteleone earn NJCAA Player of the Week honors
Jasmine Blanton of Owens Community College and Julia Monteleone of Lorain County Community College earned NJCAA Player of the Week honors for this Week. Blanton averages 18 points per game over the bread for Owens, including a 27 point performance against Lake Michigan College on December 29th en route to earning Division II Player of the Week Honors. The 5' 9" guard shot 77 percent from the free throw line and added 8.2 rebounds over the pas four games. Blanton's drive and determination are what sets her apart from most athletes according to Head Coach Michael Llanas. He admires her poise to compete for a league title and run at a regional title.
Monteleone nailed a career high six three pointers three times in the past two week to be name the Division III Player of the week. The 5' 6" forward led Lorain County to a 3-1 record over the bread, averaging 19.75 points per game and six rebounds per game. Her week high cam on a 26 point performance in a 76-61 win over CCAC-Allegheny (PA).
